I have been thinking that perhaps we should keep a running list of seed available in the seed bank forum, and when members log on they could check it out if they are looking for seed. It would eliminate sending mass emails. If a member is interested in seed, they can contact the seed bank manager to complete the transaction.

The post would only have to be adjusted if additional seed were donated or if the seed bank ran out of a species.

I think it is important to make this simple for the member and simple for the manager.

Any comments?

Mick

I like the idea, Mick. Are you the person that is handling the seeds as of now? IF so, please let me know where I can send some. Will there be any rules for getting the seeds? I know in the past a certain number of seeds were free and then anything over that there was a nominal fee.

Randy, Currently no one is handling the seeds but I will be glad to start taking the donations should you want to send them to me.

This is up to the consensus of board members but I feel like the more common seeds (or plentiful) should be free and the more rare or limited seeds will be .10 to .50 cents each. (all plus shipping).

Agree on your feelings on the cost. If you would send me your mailing address, I will get some out to you within the next couple of weeks. BTW, are you only going to offer palm seeds, or other subtropical seeds as well. Example being Texas star hibiscus, cardoon, and Caesalpinia gilliesii.

I will email you the address. I don't see any problem with offering those other seeds as well. When I get them I will begin a list on the seed bank board. I might be able to pick some brazoria seeds as well if the birds don't get them all.

Sounds good... I will see what I can get together and send you. I do have some that were given to me to donate to the society. It is a small quantity, but we might be able to get more donated if the seed bank states where the seeds came from. Sort of an advertisement for a nursery specializing in a certain type of plant.

Yes I will state who donated them, unless they request to be anonymous.

Mick, I have been thinking more about this and would like to recommend that you limit the number of seeds to someone no matter how many seeds you might have of a certain species. This will help ensure other members have an opportunity to try them and not all to one member. Just thinking out loud here...

I agree with Randy. It would probably be most equitable to put seeds in packets of 10 or so and then offer them as a "package."

I agree and wouldn't want one member to get all the seeds of one species. Maybe do a packet of five, ten, or twenty seed for free depending on the quantity of seeds on hand and then a per seed charge for orders above that with a maximum cap. I will definitely have some kinks to work out during the initial offering.

Hello to all,
I am Seedbank Coordinator for Central Florida Palm and Cycad Society. Our members donate seeds from their own trees to the Seedbank and we sell these to palm/cycad fanciers to try germinating/growing on their own. Prices are modest and small orders okay -- $6.00 minimum. Proceeds fund community beautification projects and research.
If you'd like, we would happily help you get your own Seedbank going. To that end, we can send you seeds of species that do well in colder zones when we have way more than our chapter can sell.
Please have someone email me direct and we can discuss the idea.
Lucinda
