A handful of enthusiasts meet at the Atlanta Botanical Garden and set the Southeastern Palm and Exotic Plant Society in motion. Its journal is called Rhapidophyllum, after the Southeastern native needle palm—the world's most cold-hardy palm.

Kanapana Botanical Garden, a joint meeting with the Florida First Coast chapter of the International Palm Society, visits to the Gainesville Tree Farm, Dr Kyle Brown's garden and nursery, and a boat trip into the Okeefenokee Swamp.
